WHyThird Spaces Matter at Umeed
At Umeed, we know healing doesn’t just happen in a therapy room — it happens in connection. That’s why we focus so strongly on creating third spaces: places outside of work and home where people can gather, belong, and breathe.
For multicultural communities, these spaces are especially powerful. They become hubs of laughter, chai, music, and story — places where culture is celebrated rather than hidden, and where people can see themselves reflected in others. In a world that can feel isolating or divided, third spaces remind us that we’re not alone.
Our community events — from open mic nights to film screenings, safe spaces, and student programs — are more than just activities. They’re opportunities for social cohesion: weaving together different identities, experiences, and voices into a stronger, more supportive fabric.
Because when we invest in community, we invest in belonging. And at Umeed, belonging is the starting point for wellbeing.
Stay in the loop
South Asian QueerSpace
A space to exhale, belong, and just be. Our South Asian Queer Space is a monthly gathering for LGBTQIA+ folks of South Asian heritage and diaspora to connect, share stories, and build community in a way that feels safe, joyful, and affirming.
Whether you’re here to make new friends, explore identity, or simply sit in a room where you don’t have to explain yourself — this is for you. Expect laughter, chai, real talk, and the kind of community care that makes you feel seen.
This is not just an event — it’s a space created by us, for us. 🌈✨
cha in the city
A space to talk, connect, and just be—because South Asian men deserve a space for real conversations, too.
Cha in the City is a community-led group for South Asian men, created in collaboration with Shakti Mental Health and Taraki (UK). We know that navigating masculinity, mental health, cultural expectations, and identity can be complex, and too often, South Asian men don’t have a space to openly talk about their experiences. That’s why we’re here—to change that, one cup of cha at a time.
shabd: multicultural open mic
From 2026, Shabd will become your monthly go-to for stories, poetry, and performance that cross languages and cultures. It’s our multicultural open mic where every voice matters — whether you’re speaking, singing, or simply soaking in the magic of community.
Open to all languages and all people, Shabd is a space to share, listen, and celebrate the beauty of words in every form. Stay in the loop, because every month a new chorus of voices will remind us how language connects us, heals us, and keeps us alive.
Between the Covers: mental health practitioner BookClub
Take a pause from clinical notes and case reports, and join us between the covers of books that inspire, challenge, and nourish us as practitioners. This book club is a space for psychologists, counsellors, social workers, and mental health professionals to gather in community—sharing reflections, swapping insights, and reminding ourselves why we fell in love with this work in the first place.
We’ll dive into thought-provoking reads across psychology, memoir, fiction, and cultural commentary, always keeping an eye on how stories connect back to our practice and our humanity. Whether you’re here to sharpen your lens, spark creativity, or simply exhale among peers, this book club is your invitation to learn, connect, and grow together.
South Asian Women’s Group
Our monthly meet-ups bring together South Asian women from all walks of life to connect, support, and grow. Some months we gather for deep conversations, other times for shared meals, creative workshops, or just a chance to unwind in good company. No matter the setting, the goal remains the same: building a space where we can feel seen, heard, and valued.
This is more than just a group—it’s a sisterhood, a network, and a reminder that we are never alone in our journeys. Whether you’re looking for connection, inspiration, or just a safe space to be, you belong here.
Reel Talk: Movie Nights
Grab your popcorn and your people — Reel Talk is our monthly movie night where the big screen meets real conversations. From cult classics to thought-provoking films, we’ll watch, laugh, cry, and then stick around to unpack the stories together.
It’s more than a movie night — it’s a space to connect, share perspectives, and see ourselves in the reels that move us.
Desi BookClub
Books bring us together — across chai, conversations, and shared curiosity. Desi Reads is a book club for anyone who loves stories that go beyond the mainstream. Each month, we dive into books by BIPOC authors, centring South Asian and diasporic voices while embracing diverse perspectives from around the globe.
This is a space to laugh, reflect, and connect over stories that explore culture, identity, migration, love, healing, and everything in between. Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just picking up your first novel in years, come join us — because every story is better when it’s shared.
